We work in 37 countries around the world.

Almost 900 children under-five die every day from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation.

We spend 78p in every pound on delivering water, toilets and hygiene, and influencing decision makers.

Around the world, 650 million people are struggling without safe water to drink – and 2.3 billion are living without a decent toilet.

This Ramadan, you can help change this by providing clean water and decent toilets. And that’s not all – your support will mean lasting change.

How will WaterAid use your Zakat?

By finding ways to bring clean water, toilets and hygiene to the most marginalised communities, your support will help eliminate poverty and pave the way for a better life.

Access to clean water really does change lives.

  • It means that water is safe to drink and doesn’t cause diarrhoea and other potentially deadly diseases.
  • It means that children can spend more time in school rather than off sick with frequent stomach bugs.
  • It means that women and girls get back the time they would otherwise be spending on long, back-breaking walks to collect water from rivers and streams.

Your Zakat can help us bring this transformation to communities around the world.

Every pound you donate makes a difference and saves lives

The poorest groups, such as women or disabled people, often miss out on water and sanitation services and hygiene promotion, affecting their health and prospects and marginalising them even further.

Water, sanitation and hygiene services should benefit everybody. For instance, latrines should be accessible for wheelchair users and menstrual hygiene education should be available for all women and girls.

We work with local partners to reach the poorest and most marginalised people, and call on governments to provide these solutions for everyone everywhere.

We believe it is only governments who can create an environment where public and private investments and civil society can all operate effectively.

We work with them to develop national strategies, based on strong governance, financial and technical systems, to reach all of their citizens with sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services.

Ending extreme poverty and building a healthier, more prosperous world for the poorest people cannot be done without safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

With our partners, we develop plans that integrate these basic human services into their health, education, nutrition and many other areas of development.

We put a special focus on promoting good hygiene behaviour, as it is critical to preventing the spread of diseases by maximising the health benefits of safe water and sanitation.

Alongside women’s organisations, health, education and marketing partners, we are delivering effective campaigns to eliminate bad hygiene practices, such as defecating in the open.

The generosity of our supporters is behind everything we do. Individuals, companies, trusts, foundations and governments are all committed to our vision of a world where everyone everywhere has safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Donations from appeals, events and funding partnerships provide the vital resources to carry out our work.

Many of our tireless, intrepid and inventive supporters are also fantastic campaigners and advocates, telling their friends about WaterAid, encouraging others to get involved, and raising the profile of the issues behind the crisis.
