WaterAid's partners in Mali
PROTOS
WaterAid has a collaborative alliance in Mali with PROTOS, a Ghent-based funds provider and advocacy organisation.
The first phase of the collaboration from 2003-2004 was characterised by the development of joint actions, joint advocacy initiatives and comment on policy issues related to access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene promotion for the poor in a selection of locations that are representative of the major urban and rural environments in Mali.
An evaluation of the partnership was undertaken in 2005, with that year being considered a transitional period enabling achievements to be consolidated, lessons learned to be assessed, changes to be made and a new joint strategy for the longer term to be drawn up.
Non governmental organisations (NGOs)
A number of NGOs are involved in the field of hydraulics. To mention a few: The ACD (Action Couverture et Development), ACORD (Association de Cooperation et de Recherche pour le Developpment), ADMIR (Aide au developpement en Milieu Rural) AMADE Association Malienne pour le Developpement, GRAT (Groupe de Recherche et d'Applications Techniques), STOP SAHEL (Association Malienne pour la Protection de l'Environnement).
AMEPPE
(Association Malienne pour l'Education du Public et la Protection de l'environement). This local NGO was created in 1989 by the Ministry for territorial administration and Development. It aims to improve the analysis of the situation at the local level and formulate programs, as well as to set up projects that involve the local population.
AMEPPE is working on three different regions: the region of Segou with its 11 villages, the region of Koulikoro with its nine villages and Sikasso with its three villages. The initiative was possible thanks to the support of other partners working in areas of environment, water and food security.
Amongst these partners: The German Service for Development, Terre Nouvelle (Belgium), Terre des Hommes Suisses, Chretiens pour Sahel (Luxembourg), Fondation Jean Paul II, WDP (Germany). Current work in progress includes provision of potable water in eight villages of Koulounikoro, and helping to find water in the Diako region.
The results obtained are an improvement in terms of the families' income, satisfaction of the needs in potable water and a better management of local resources.
