Niger

Context

A vast, arid state on the edge of the Sahara desert, Niger endured austere military rule for much of its post-independence history. It is rated by the UN as one of the world's least-developed nations.

With little primary education, Niger has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world. Its health system is basic and disease is widespread. Access to water and sanitation is limited, and sanitation coverage stands at just 9%.

WaterAid's plans
  • Niger is an ecologically fragile environment so we will deepen our expertise around water resource management in extremely water-stressed areas, providing valuable evidence for use in our work around the global climate change debate.
  • We have already supported local governments in the six areas in which we will be working to help them develop local plans, which include water, sanitation and hygiene services.

NB. Official statistics tend to understate the extent of water and sanitation problems, sometimes by a large factor. There are not sufficient resources available for accurate monitoring of either population or coverage. Varying definitions of water and sanitation coverage are used and national figures mask large regional differences in coverage.
