WaterAid partner feedback: Keystone performance surveys

21 Jun 2016

WaterAid partner feedback: Keystone performance survey 2014In 2014, WaterAid commissioned Keystone Accountability to conduct a survey of our country programme partners to find out what they think of WaterAid. This was followed up in 2016 with a second, light-touch survey. Since 2014 WaterAid has been developing a new strategy which has involved a great deal of stakeholder participation so the questions we asked in 2016 were related to that process.

Partnership and collaboration is central to WaterAid’s approach, and critical to our effectiveness in working towards universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene. This survey was conducted to help us to improve our ways of working with partners, and to demonstrate accountability to our partners by asking for their feedback.

The reports from both surveys can be downloaded below.

Highlights from the 2016 report include:

  • The highest-rated area was the level of understanding of WaterAid’s plans and strategies, closely followed by the extent to which WaterAid is seen as a leader in the sector. These two areas were also highly rated in 2014.
  • The only area that shows a statistically notable change over time is the extent to which WaterAid involves partners in shaping its strategy. This was to be expected as the survey covers the intense strategic planning period of 2015, indicating that partners felt strongly involved in the process.
  • As with the 2014 report, the lowest-rated area was WaterAid's explaining of its exit strategy, a known area which we need to improve on.
  • Overall, the average score from all questions has marginally increased over time. WaterAid has invested in strengthening partnership practice, which may take time to make a difference in terms of impact on partners.

In the 2016 report, partners were also asked about the extent to which they would recommend WaterAid to others, with WaterAid comparing favourably to many other organisations.

The responses from our partners in both surveys have highlighted weaknesses as well as strengths in our approach, and we welcome the feedback to continue to improve our partnerships in future. This is supported by on-going training in partnership practice and the partnership framework and toolkit.
