From promise to reality

There is an urgent need for Southern African leaders to deliver on their water, sanitation and hygiene commitments.
  • 174 million people, almost two thirds of the population, do not have access to basic sanitation, and over 100 million go without clean, safe water.
  • Each year 120,000 children under the age of five die from diarrhoea.
  • Of the fifteen countries in the Southern African Development Community region, only three are on track to achieve the 2015 Millennium Development Goal target to halve the proportion of people without basic sanitation.

From promise to reality, a briefing by our Southern Africa team, presents some of the major challenges and calls on governments to take the necessary steps to strengthen the sector and provide essential funding.
