Jhalak Damai, 41, and her husband Hira Damai, 51

Jhalak and Hira married in 1985 and live in Tosramkhola village between two mountain ranges. They are dalits, meaning they belong to the ‘untouchable’ caste.

The couple and their five children live high on the hillside. Because of their caste, they must use a particular water source, far from their home, which can only be used by other dalit people. People in higher castes tend to live lower on the hills, closer to water.”

Before WaterAid began work in this area the major sources of drinking water were from springs and rivers. Landslides and road disruptions are common during the rainy season, making Jhalak’s steep and uneven journey to water even more dangerous.
