A lack of safe water and toilets has an enormous impact on Angolan lives. Life expectancy is just 50, one of the lowest in the world.

After many years of civil war, Angola is showing signs of real growth thanks to its valuable resources. However, life expectancy remains low and millions lack safe water and basic toilets.

The crisis

For nearly three decades Angola was engulfed by civil war. With the war now over and the country progressing, many Angolans still lack essential services, affecting health, education and livelihoods.

There is little information available on how many people lack safe water and sanitation in Angola but the scale of the problem is clear. Some estimate the figure to be at least 10 million – half the population.

Without these basics, Angola's people will be unable to take their first, essential step out of poverty

Our approach

Before WaterAid can transform lives in Angola we need to collect accurate information on where the need is greatest. To achieve this we will use technologies such as water point mapping that help us to find the communities most in need.

At the same time, we will work with local governments to develop plans to meet the needs of their communities. We will encourage them to prioritise the poorest and most marginalised people.

We also aim to work with the national Government to raise awareness of the important role safe water and toilets will play in the country's development. This will help us reach as many people as possible.
