As more families find their water drying up, they must choose between water that could be making them sick, and none at all.
Sreynich and her great-grandmother Lim live in Kampong Chhnang in Cambodia. In recent years, increasing droughts have caused the wells in their remote community to dry up. 75-year-old Lim must now walk to fetch water for her and Sreynich from an open pond.
There’s litter around it and every day the dry season progresses, the water gets lower – and murkier. In the hope of making it safer for Sreynich, Lim boils it.
I feel sad to drink the water…I think that viruses come from the plastic bags in the water. I boil the water and then when it is cold, I put it into the bottle for the children.

When baby Sreynich gets ill, Lim often can’t afford medicine – all she can give her is the same murky water. Then she must wait, hoping Sreynich will make it through another illness.
Two billion people - families like Lim’s and Sreynich’s – do not have a source of water that can safely withstand the impacts of a changing climate.
