What do you think are the most important things for students to have at schools? Books? A good teacher?
It may not come to mind straight away, but water is just as crucial to children’s ability to get a good education.
Without it, students are forced to drink and wash their hands with dirty, dangerous water – which causes illness that can kill.
Ester, a schoolgirl in Timor explains, “The water is smelly and tastes salty. Sometimes when we drink the water we get stomach aches and diarrhoea.”
Ester tells us “I want to be a teacher some day!”
But if she can’t get to school?
“It might stop my dream. Even if there is a dream it might not come true.”
You might know that 800 children die every day in our world from diarrhoeal diseases… A case of diarrhoea can be deadly in countries like Timor-Leste where Ester lives.
“We need to collect water for school lunch, and we can’t wash our hands before eating. We feel really, really sad because when we need to collect water, we need to climb fences, we need to walk, it is hard and we miss class..." - Ester
When you give today, we’ll install clean water systems into a school like Ester’s, and give the children clean water to drink and wash their hands after using the toilet.
Just $23 could help provide a student with access to clean water at their school.
