Event information

Help us get the nation talking toilets on World Toilet Day.

Every November, WaterAid encourages communities to mark World Toilet Day with a fundraising activity. Our goal is the same each year: we want to make it normal for everybody to talk about toilets, and how they save lives.

1 in 3 people worldwide still don’t have access to a decent toilet. This World Toilet Day, you can do something about that by running a fundraising or awareness activity in your workplace, school, church, or community. For every $25 raised we could help give children safe toilets at school. Regardless of how you decide to fundraise, you can donate the money to us by filling in this form or creating a fundraising page here.

There are many activities you can do to raise money or awareness for WaterAid on or in the lead up to World Toilet Day. Here are some of the best ideas:

Pay to Pee

Nominate an office day in November where staff have to pay to use the toilet. All you need is a few fundraising boxes and posters to get started. Learn more at

Learn on the Loo

The average person spends almost 8 hours on the toilet every month. Imagine if you spent that time learning something new? You can download free toilet -door learning posters here or learn more at

Toilet-themed bake-off

Test out your baking skills by competing to create the best toilet or poo-themed cake. Expect a lot of rocky roads and chocolate swiss rolls!

Dress up event

Celebrate World Toilet Day by dressing up in yellow, brown or as a Sanitation Superhero. Contact us for a free costume!

Build your own toilet

Put your creativity to the test by constructing a toilet out of household items and recyclables. Give yourself a 20-minute time limit and see what you can come up with.

Toilet-paper tower

Attempt to break the world record for the tallest toilet-paper tower (the record is 28 rolls!). Compete in small teams to see who can get highest!

Comedy Night or Comedy Quiz

Show off your favourite toilet jokes by hosting a comedy night or quiz night after work. Invite your funniest colleagues to do their own stand-up sets or hire a local comedian and use the door fees to collect donations.

Get your school involved

Use toilet humour to inspire your class to take action on toilets. We want students all over Australia to write their own riddles, puns, and knock knock jokes about the humble loo. Or why not hold a comedy show at your school and ask for a small donation for WaterAid to attend?

What is World Toilet Day?

World Toilet Day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2013 as a day to raise awareness of the importance of sanitation. In Australia having a day all about toilets may seem funny.

But for millions of people around the world it's no laughing matter. A shocking one in three of the world’s population do not have access to a decent toilet.

Many have no choice but to face the indignity of going to the loo in the open, where they are exposed to disease and vulnerable to harassment and even attack. It's a serious issue that can be hard to talk about – so we want to overcome our embarrassment and get the nation talking about toilets.
