In 1981 the Thirsty World Conference brought members of the UK water industry together. They decided to unite, to reach the millions of people living without clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene by establishing WaterAid.
WaterAid’s first projects started in Zambia and Sri Lanka in the same year.
His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, became our first president in 1991 and in 1994 we become one of Glastonbury Festival’s chosen charities.
In 2004 WaterAid became a global organisation welcoming America and Australia as members and WaterAid Sweden was founded in 2009. In 2013 WaterAid Japan was founded and we joined forces with WaterCan, who later became WaterAid Canada. WaterAid India became a member of WaterAid in 2016.
WaterAid United Kingdom coordinates the work we do in Africa and South Asia, as well as supporting our programmes around the world.
