Premier of 'Jol diye shuru' - Let's begin with water

WaterAid in partnership with HSBC and the University of Liberal Arts (ULAB) premiered a docu-fiction film ‘Jol diye shuru’, providing an opportunity for youth to click and capture ground level impacts and changes in the highly vulnerable climate affected communities of Dacope, Khulna. As part of a continued partnership between WaterAid and HSBC, this documentary is the result of a competition held at ULAB amongst students of the Media Studies and Journalism department. Following a rigorous process of proposal submission, idea presentations, evaluations and final selection, the team ‘Cinepoka’, made up of a six-member crew of bright passionate students locked first position in the championship.

Having consumed unsafe water from as long as she remembers, this documentary ‘Jol diye shuru’ (Bangla)/ ‘Let’s begin with water’ (English) walks the viewer though the life of ‘Nitu’ – a school-going girl who shares a typical day in her life where currently clean water is easily available and widely consumed; something which was not as normal for her and her community even a year or two back.

The docu-fiction was premiered at ULAB premises in the presence of WaterAid and HSBC. The hour long event unfolded the film in front of enthusiasts from the university’s Media Studies and Journalism department, with Md. Liakath Ali, Director of Programmes and Policy Advocacy of WaterAid and Syeda Afzalun Nessa, Corporate Sustainability Manager of HSBC being present as key speakers at the event.

This initiative, is one amongst the many youth engagement activities WaterAid is currently carrying out. The potential of youth can bring solutions to dire crisis in WASH, and opportunities like this seeking their participation and active role can help build viable change and in achieving the sustainable global goals.
