Rachel’s Story: From Dreams to Reality
Rachel is a bright and determined 12-year-old girl from Chinganji with big dreams! She wants to become a doctor, helping the people of her community stay healthy. But without clean water, her dreams are on hold. Every day, she wakes up before the sun, walking for miles to fetch water from a shallow, unprotected well. The water is dirty, but without it, her family has nothing. Despite the struggle, Rachel remains determined, because like with so many girls in her village, there is no other choice.
Rachel’s day reflects the reality of so many in her village: hours spent walking for water means missing school, struggling to stay healthy, and watching opportunities slip away.

Clean water didn’t just change their daily routine — it opened the door to opportunity. They’ve even set up a business making samosas to sell in their spare time! Their success is a testament to the power of water to transform lives, and with your help, Rachel’s village can experience the same.
Merifa and Fanny’s village got clean water in 2021 when WaterAid worked with their community to install a 30,000-litre water tank.
"We no longer have to wake up early to go draw water before school, and then come back to draw more water. So it was a very good feeling for us."
As part of the same project, their school got clean water.
“All I remember is the excitement that there was at school. People were crowding around the taps and opening and closing them because they weren't use to seeing water like that."
Three years on, there is more time to be at school and with friends.
“Our grades have improved. We have seen a big difference now that we have tap water near us, because we’re spending most of our time studying instead of going to draw water.”
