WaterAid is the only water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) focused international non-governmental organisation (INGO) in Ethiopia. We are one of the leading WASH organisations in the sector with a clear mission: to deliver sustainable WASH services to everyone, everywhere.

WaterAid in Ethiopia since 1991

We have a strong reputation for our technical expertise in WASH service delivery, empowering people to claim their rights to WASH, building capacity in the sector and influencing stakeholders at all levels to create an enabling environment for lasting WASH initiatives that leaves no one behind.

From 2011-2016

WaterAid Ethiopia had an annual budget of £4 million (USD 5.2 million) and worked in partnership with local NGOs. Through our work, so far we’ve reached 3.5 million people with WASH, focusing on sustainability, equitable distribution of services, targeted capacity-development, stronger urban portfolio, and sanitation and hygiene.

Under our current Country Strategy (2016-2022)

We envision ensuring everyone, everywhere has clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene by 2030. Our programmes are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Ethiopian Government’s development priorities of ending extreme poverty in Ethiopia. We believe that extreme poverty cannot be eradicated without access to WASH.

We continue to make a significant contribution to ensuring that integrated, resilient, inclusive WASH systems are in place by 2022 through working towards four strategic outputs supported by three distinct yet interlinked programmes of work.
