With the support of ONGC, we ensure appropriate water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure and facilities for children studying in Government Schools in Bokaro District, Jharkhand.

Our partnership

In India, ONGC has been ranked as the Top Energy Company and is the largest oil and gas exploration and production company. It is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) of the Government of India, under the administrative control of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

WaterAid India and ONGC have joined hands in a year-long partnership to ensure children in the government schools of Bokaro, Jharkhand have access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.

The programme is effective in 20 government schools in Bokaro in five Gram Panchayats (village councils), with an aim to reach to over 2000 children. The intent is to create appropriate and long-lasting infrastructure and facilities for the children.

The formation of School Management Committees (SMCs) is an initiative by the government to bridge the gap between communities and schools. They also provide an effective oversight to ensure that all basic requirements of the school are met.

Our partnership with ONGC takes into account the existence of groups like SMCs in schools to collaborate with them in the planning, implementation and management of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in their respective institutions. Simultaneously, the partnership also facilitates the construction of separate toilets for boys and girls, along with functional drinking water stations.

In order to ensure long-lasting impact of our work, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) groups are formed in these schools involving school students who are oriented and sensitized about the importance of safe hygiene behaviour and other aspects of clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. This not only helps them but other students as well to adopt and inculcate the desired behaviour among their peers which even extends to family members.
