A snapshot of the urban drinking water situation from a policy, programme, institutional and systems perspective. The demand for water is only expected to rise as the country urbanises further. Addressing the multiple challenges of urban water supply – from access to safe and affordable drinking water to improving service level benchmarks and to stringent regulatory authorities - all need a combination of short-term and medium-term solutions. Therefore, it becomes crucial to create institutions with defined roles and responsibilities along with clear lines of accountability. It also means to ensure the leadership role of the community and various stakeholders in implementing the solutions.
