In Kumursha village, Shah Jahan Khan’s life has
undergone a profound transformation thanks to a
dedicated initiative by the PepsiCo Foundation and
WaterAid. Shah Jahan, who is 35 years old and lives
with an 80% physical disability, has faced significant
challenges throughout his life. His story exemplifies how
thoughtful interventions can dramatically improve the
quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

Shah Jahan has always struggled with mobility issues,
relying heavily on his tricycle for movement. “I can’t
walk, sit, or stand by myself. The only mode of mobility I
have is my tricycle. That is my life partner.” His physical
limitations have made everyday activities, especially
using the bathroom, a daunting task. “Since childhood,
I have fallen, gotten up, gotten bruises, and broken my
limb. I even fell in the bathroom once, and my leg got
stuck inside the pan.”

Before the intervention, Shah Jahan’s home had a basic
bathroom, but it was ill-equipped to meet his needs as
his condition worsened over time. “I need at least two
people to help me when I go to the bathroom every
time. A lot of times I had to just control it because no
one was at home.” This lack of proper facilities was not
only a daily struggle but also a source of considerable
discomfort and inconvenience.

Shahjahan Khan's access to toilet

The situation began to improve when PepsiCo, in
collaboration with WaterAid, built a new toilet at Shah
Jahan’s home. “PepsiCo has built a new toilet at my
house. They have installed a commode pan for me,
which is easier for me to use.” This new facility included
a railing from his room to the bathroom, which greatly
eased his mobility. “This has been built so I can move
around alone, go downstairs, sit, or walk by myself. Even
if I slip by accident, I have something to hold on to.”
One of the most significant changes has been the
installation of a new chamber outside the house to
address previous water supply issues. “They probably
kept some foreign insects inside that eat the excreta so
the chamber never fills up.” This innovative solution has
greatly improved the sanitation and functionality of the
bathroom.
Shah Jahan’s gratitude towards the initiative is profound.
“I convey my thanks to WaterAid and the PepsiCo
Foundation. I hope they help many more disabled people
like me.” His appreciation extends to the individuals who
made the project possible, particularly Utpal da, who
played a crucial role in coordinating the efforts. “My
heart is thankful to him, and I hope he does something
like this for more people like me.”
The new bathroom facility has significantly impacted
Shah Jahan’s daily routine. “The biggest change in my
life is that I can now go to the bathroom by myself.
Previously, I had to ask someone to bring me water or
take me to the bathroom. Now I don’t have to.” This
newfound independence has brought him a sense of
relief and normalcy.
Shah Jahan’s day now revolves around a more
manageable routine. “In the morning, I first go to the
bathroom, then freshen up. Then I have some tea and sit
with my sons to teach them.” His life, once fraught with
difficulties, is now marked by a significant improvement
in his ability to handle personal needs and engage more
fully in family life.
Shah Jahan’s story underscores the profound impact that
well-designed interventions can have on individuals with
disabilities. By addressing critical needs and providing
tailored solutions, the initiative has not only enhanced
his quality of life but also empowered him to
