A large cohort of the populations living in the country that are highly affected by COVID-19 reside within Yangon region and comprise of migrant and daily wage workers that live in high density informal (slum) settlements with little to no access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities.
Like during any other natural disaster or humanitarian crisis, these communities are disproportionately affected due to their poor socioeconomic conditions and remain further at risk due to the imposed restrictions on work and travel owing to the pandemic.
WaterAid, with support from Prudential Myanmar and WA UK, is implementing a rapid response project in these communities.
We have a 4-pronged framework including:
- Incorporating infrastructure
- Hygiene behaviour change promotion
- Policy influencing
- Impact assessment of our interventions
