Your company can walk for clean water in March

With WaterAid’s campaign March for Water we engage the public and corporations to join us in walking for a more equal world where women and girls have sustainable access to clean water. Walk with us, and log your steps in March. Walk so that we can reach the global sustainability goals.

Today 771 million people lack access to clean water. In 8 cases of 10, the task of fetching water for the family falls on girls and women, a task that often takes many hours each day.

The daily burden of carrying water results in women not having the time to work and earn their own income, and forces girls to quit school. They get stuck in a vicious cycle of poverty and disease. They don’t get further than to a dirty waterhole.

The lack of clean water results in that many of the global sustainability goals can’t be reached, for example goal 5 (equality) and goal 6 (water and sanitation). We need to change this!

A fun and healthy activity

Therefore, WaterAid runs the campaign March for Water every March. With this campaign, we engage both corporations and the public to walk for water. To walk for water as a company is a fun and healthy activity and at the same time making a difference.

During March, all your steps are registered in our step counter app. This is used to highlight the importance of clean water as a human, and female, right. During last year’s campaign over 550 million steps, more than ten laps around the whole world, were registered. This year we want to go even further!

Your engagement helps us to draw attention to this vital question, and the donations that WaterAid receives during March for Water will change the lives of women and girls all over the world.

You can easily register your steps in our app "WaterAid – March for Water" which is available both for iPhone and Android. Contact us to purchase a support packet to add your company or organisation to the app and let your co-workers gather steps together! Why March for Water?

How does WaterAid work to make sure that more women receive clean water?

Since girls and women often are especially vulnerable to the consequences of the lack of clean water, toilets, and hygiene, WaterAid’s work to increase access to these things means that their lives and opportunities improve. WaterAid’s work often has a strong focus on toilets, water and hygiene in schools and hospitals to give girls the possibility to study and make sure that women can give birth without risking their lives to infections.

WaterAid actively works to strengthen women’s rights. For example by drilling wells and building toilets, but also by mobilising and educating women. By letting women groups have the responsibility to design, implement and maintain projects, their economic opportunities increase, as well as their independence and influence in society. Therefore, WaterAid’s work to increase access to clean water also contributes to empowering women and improving their chances to get out of poverty.

12 million people in Madagascar lack clean water.
That is half of the country’s population.

We don’t need to drink water from dirty waterholes anymore, we have clean water in the tap now.

That was an account from the 28-year-old Raoly from the village Tsarafangirta at Madagascar. She said this to our collages when they visited her village some months after they, with the help of WaterAid, had received clean water.

Before the village received clean water, Raoly and everyone else fetched their drinking water from a dirty waterhole a few kilometres away. Three times a day, Raoly had to walk a long distance to fetch enough water for her family. She carried 20 litres of water on her head. All this has changed with clean water.

We have the time to plant and garden more now when we have clean water close by, we’re not at all as tired anymore since we don’t have to fetch water. Life is easier with clean water in the tap, says Raoly.

Raoly no longer needs to wear herself out to get water. But all over the world, millions of girls and women are still forced to dedicate hours each day fetching water. The daily burden of carrying water makes it impossible for women to work and earn an income, and girls are forced to quit school.
