Can you imagine drinking water that’s so dirty it has worms in it? Or having to go to the toilet outside, with nowhere to wash your hands after?
This is normal for over 70% of people in the district of Manjakandriana. But it shouldn’t be.
This winter, we need to raise £2 million to bring clean water to 12,000 people across nine villages, including nine schools and two healthcare facilities — and thousands more around the world. But we need your help.
No one should have their access denied. Will you help us bring clean water to Manjakandriana?
Juliette, 56, has lived in Ambohimanatrika village in Manjakandriana her whole life. Her grandparents built the first houses there and through the generations, she and her family continue to be the heartbeat of the community.
In Juliette's village, the two water sources are hard to reach and unprotected, so as well as the water being dirty, the journey to fetch it can be unsafe.
"We suffer greatly during the rainy season when we collect water, because the road is slippery and as an old person I sometimes fall on the way to get to the water point."
Juliette is the head of a large and loving family: "I have three daughters and three sons. We Malagasy people really love our children."
Her children have blessed her with 11 grandchildren and, like any grandmother, she wants the best for them: "My wish for my grandchildren is that they don’t inherit our current life."
Being denied access to water impacts Juliette's family’s health, education and ability to work, locking them in poverty.
