Together, we’re working with communities in countries across sub-Saharan Africa, including Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda, to improve over 80,000 people’s access to life-changing water, sanitation and hygiene.

Our partnership

Our first five-year partnership with Diageo, producer of global drinks brands including Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness, began in 2015.

This partnership focused on advocating for universal access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) at local, national and global levels, aiming to reach those who are hardest hit by water scarcity.

Diageo also funded a £200,000 women-led project in Myanmar, which provided 10,000 people with access to clean water in households and healthcare facilities, and delivered educational and entrepreneurial opportunities in Yangon, where many women migrant workers live.

Society 2030: Spirit of Progress

In December 2020, we once again joined forces in a renewed £4 million, five-year partnership to help transform lives with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene in communities across Diageo’s global supply chains and beyond.

The new commitment is part of Diageo’s ten-year action plan, Society 2030: Spirit of Progress, and aims to reach hundreds of thousands of people. This partnership is also supporting advocacy work towards Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring everyone has clean water, sanitation and hygiene by 2030.

Business Case for WASH

Diageo is one of five leading companies undertaking a pilot research project with us to cement the Business Case for WASH, which aims to evidence the financial return and other business benefits derived through WASH investment.

Together, we’re working to empower global businesses to play an active role in expanding access to safe and sustainable WASH services all along the supply chain, both in their operations and the surrounding communities where workers live. Findings from this pioneering research will be released in late 2022.

What our partners say

For over two decades we’ve been helping transform lives with the provision of clean water and sanitation, a fundamental human right.

We are delighted to [continue] this partnership, which will help us deliver our Society 2030: Spirit of Progress plan, and will enable WaterAid’s vital work to reach many more people for years to come.
Ewan Andrew, Chief Sustainability Officer, Diageo
