Give your Zakat: Bangladesh Madrassa Education Project
Together, we will bring clean water and decent sanitation and handwashing facilities to up to 50 Madrassa schools in Bangladesh, so that thousands of children can keep healthy, stay in school and fulfil their potential.
Why support?
One in five schools in Bangladesh has no clean water. Many more lack decent toilets, sinks and soap. Right now, pupils in schools face a daily struggle to stay healthy, dignified and safe. Without proper facilities, children miss out on vital education and without toilets and taps that are designed to be accessible, children with disabilities are not getting an equal chance.
What will you be funding?
Together, we will bring clean water and decent sanitation and handwashing facilities to up to 50 Madrassa schools in Bangladesh, so that thousands of children can keep healthy, stay in school and fulfil their potential.
In 2022/2023, we’ll be working with up to 50 schools in the Gaibandha (north), Sunamgonj (north east) and Khulna (south west) districts of Bangladesh, hard-to-reach areas vulnerable to climate change. With your support, we will be transforming schools with clean water and decent sanitation and handwashing facilities.
Together, we will:
-
Build and renovate handwashing facilities so pupils can wash their hands properly and keep themselves safe from disease.
-
Build and renovate sanitation blocks so that pupils have somewhere decent and private to go, and waste is managed effectively and safely.
-
Provide accessible facilities that can be used by everyone. The height of a tap or the design of a sanitation block can make all the difference.
-
Give girls the privacy, space and facilities they need to be able to deal with their periods at school. Lockable doors, bins and water to wash with make all the difference.
The impact you can have
Thanks to Zakat donations, five Madrassa schools in the Gaibandha district now have safe water through the installation of boreholes and access to improved sanitation facilities and handwashing stations. We’ve reached an incredible 2,400 students.
Your support is helping students like Hawa. WaterAid worked with her Madrassa to build a new bathroom facility that has hygienic sanitation facilities, separate for boys and girls, and provides a safe water supply. Students also now have a better understanding of good hygiene practices which helps keep them safe and healthy, thanks to educational sessions on the importance of handwashing, and children are no longer missing school due to water-related diseases.
