Event information

Stand with the millions of women and girls who have to walk for water every day – and fundraise to help change this.

Around the world, women and girls are being held back by having to walk 5km or more for water every day – denying them vital opportunities to earn, learn, and take control of their futures.

Show solidarity – and raise funds to help change this – by walking 155km, the equivalent of 5km a day, over the month.

Registrations are now closed but keep an eye on other events and learn more about our work with women and girls.

Why Walk for Water?

703 million people in the world – almost 1 in 10 of us – still don't have clean water close to home.

Without clean water, whole communities are held back: children miss out on education, people struggle to earn a decent living, and families often fall ill.

For women and girls, the burden is even greater. Millions face difficult journeys, every single day, just to fetch the water they and their families need to survive.

The time and energy devoted to collecting water could be better spent in school, with family, or earning a living.

I have to take time out from my busy day to fetch water. It takes 40 minutes to get there, and then there's a huge queue. I have to wait one to two hours, sometimes more than that.

Stand with women and girls

Join us and walk where you can, when you can – and together, we can help ensure that no woman or girl is held back by a lack of clean water.

How Walk for Water works

Aim to walk 155km over the month – that’s the equivalent of 5km a day – and track your progress as you complete the challenge.

When you sign up to Walk for Water, you'll set up your own bespoke fundraising page and set your fundraising target – we suggest aiming for £150. Once you've raised your first £5, we'll send you your free pair of WaterAid blue laces to say thank you!

On your fundraising page, you can keep track of how far you’ve walked and how much you’ve raised. Make sure you share it with friends and family so they can follow your progress and support you by making a donation.

Log your activity automatically using the fitness app Strava, or manually add your walks to your fundraising page – you’ll be able to see your individual progress, and every kilometre you complete will count towards our overall total. Whether you prefer lunchtime laps of the park, evening strolls, or long weekend hikes – it’s up to you how you choose to reach the target!

What our past walkers say

I have to say it’s the best thing that can happen to you, knowing that you’re going to make a difference to somebody who is not as privileged as you are. I’ll definitely be doing it again – when you’ve done it once, met all the other inspiring people doing it, and seen what you’re capable of, you’re hooked.
