What is Sing for Water?

Sing for Water events are community-based concerts, more commonly known as big sings. The first event took place in 2002 and was co-founded by composer Helen Chadwick and Totally Thames Festival in London. The idea of the event is that singers and choirs learn music and songs separately and then come together for one big performance. Each singer commits to raising a certain amount of money as part of the event, and all the funds go towards our vital work in Ethiopia, reaching some of the world’s poorest communities with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. To date, Sing for Water events have raised over £1 million for WaterAid.

Co-founder Helen says, "When Sing for Water first started, our dream was to raise £1,000. Over the last 15 years, you’ve turned that into over £1 million for projects in Burkina Faso, Malawi, Ghana, India, Timor-Leste and Ethiopia. It’s wonderful that so many choirs, festivals and individuals are now involved with Sing for Water."

How can I get involved?

Sing for Water Gloucester is run by a group of fantastic volunteers and will take place in the Historic Gloucester Docks. The event will take part on Gloucester Day, when there will be parades through the streets, morris dancing and loads more fun events throughout the city. Singers from choirs throughout the county will be presenting a selection of water-themed songs against the backdrop of the Mariners Church and converted warehouses. If you and your choir want to get involved with this year's event, please email [email protected].
