WaterAid has launched a collection of unique Christmas e-gifts that will help transform lives across the world with clean water and decent toilets. 

The international charity’s gifts provide a meaningful and life-changing alternative to the average present. They include a £60 water tank that holds 500 litres of water, which could help improve the health of an entire community as well as supporting farming initiatives. Around 785 million people are denied access to clean water – that’s one in ten of the world’s population.  

The collection of e-gifts also includes paying for a school toilet to be emptied, so students can focus on their studies rather than worry about their next toilet break. A staggering 2 billion people, or one in four, have no decent toilet. 

People also have the opportunity to purchase a handwashing station for £24, giving the gift of improved hygiene and disease prevention to three families this Christmas. According to the World Bank, hygiene education is the most cost-effective health intervention. 

The charity hopes the collection will inspire supporters to shake up their shopping habits and make a real difference this Christmas.  

Marcus Missen, WaterAid’s Director of Communications and Fundraising, said: 

“We are delighted to mark the Christmas season with gifts that can transform lives in the world's poorest communities. Christmas is a time for giving, and we believe there is no better gift than helping others break out of poverty.  

“Sadly, millions of people are denied access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene simply because of who they are, how much money they have, or where they live. Everyone can play a role in tackling this injustice.”  

Diarrhoeal diseases caused by a lack of clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene claim the lives of around 800 children under the age of five every single day – that’s a child every two minutes. Having access to these basics helps keep children healthy and is school, as well as giving women the time to earn a living, benefitting whole communities. 

This winter, WaterAid is hoping to raise £2 million for its Access Denied campaign, to help unlock the potential of communities around the world.
