As the COVID-19 pandemic threatens our global community, work to bring clean water, decent sanitation and good hygiene to everyone, everywhere has never been more critical.

Our teams around the world are sharing the crucial hygiene messages we must all follow to keep each other safe from coronavirus, and working to provide lasting access to water, sanitation and hygiene essentials, so people can defend against and build resilience to COVID-19 and other contagious diseases.

Our global response to COVID-19

WaterAid Japan joined our global federation in 2013, and since then have been making change happen.

They’ve been forging links with the Japanese Government, currently the largest water and sanitation donor in the world.

They’ve been building national and international partnerships, speaking at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, Finance for Development, and the UN General Assembly.

And they’ve been inspiring new supporters to help reach everyone, everywhere with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene within a generation.

The WaterAid Japan team cheer on a WaterAid runner at the Osaka Marathon.
We take clean water for granted, but it’s a resource many people can’t access easily. I hope that by running for WaterAid, more and more people will get interested in charity and start helping the environment and water issues in developing countries.

"I’m lucky to give birth in Japan in terms of water."

We asked mums-to-be around the world, including Takako in Japan, what they had packed in their maternity bags - and what difference it made knowing they’d be giving birth with or without clean water.
