The impact of Tony Welsh's legacy giving
Tony Welsh believed in this mission, and he made a significant impact during his 14 years championing WaterAid's work. Tony recognized that investing in clean water meant he was unlocking opportunity for some of the world’s most vulnerable people—particularly women and girls.
In La Guajira, Colombia, an arid desert peninsula on the Caribbean coast with a population of approximately 985,500, women and children spend much of their day searching for water for their family, walking miles under the scorching sun. The water that they do find is often contaminated and makes them and their children sick.
With the generous support provided by Tony Welsh Legacy, WaterAid implemented the "Tony’s Legacy in Action" project. Between 2021 and 2024, WaterAid expanded clean water access in La Guajira significantly by working locally with communities, schools, organizations and governments to provide clean water, decent toilets and hygiene access.
These programs culminated in the Wuin Yanama Festival, a women-only soccer tournament led by community leaders celebrating one of their favorite pastimes with lessons learned through hygiene workshops and trainings.
