Five Water Wins on World Water Day

A group of people is gathered outdoors in a rural setting during daytime. A woman in the foreground, wearing a red blouse and a patterned skirt, is smiling brightly while standing behind a table with fresh tomatoes.

Happy World Water Day

Did you know that over the past 40 years, WaterAid has reached over 29 million people with clean water? That’s over 29 million lives changed thanks to you and your support!

This World Water Day (March 22), we want to introduce you to five people whose lives you’ve helped change through your generosity, advocacy and tireless support of clean water.

Before we had access to clean water, I would make four trips a day carrying a heavy bucket. Now that we have water nearby, I have enough time to order tomatoes and then to sell them - something I didn't have time to do in the past. The tap has made my stall possible. With my business, I think life will be better for my children."

Before we had water in our school we would walk to the nearby river or hand pump to collect water. The hand pump would always be so busy with people from throughout the community there, and students would often be very late back to class. Now we have water on site, I can focus on my studies. I want to be an Engineer when I grow up and help others with getting water into their communities.”

When I was little, I used to collect water before and after school. There was no clean water, and children used to be sick due to the water we drank. Now, things are different. My grandchildren can drink water straight from the tap as we know it is safe to drink. It has been treated and tested before coming to the taps. I am so happy — it's something I never thought would have happened here.”

The water filter that we received from WaterAid has been amazing. Before we had to boil the water before being able to drink it, whereas now we just fill up the tank and we have filtered water in the kitchen. Even the taste of the water is so different, and knowing it is clean water that won’t make us sick is a dream for all of us.

Clean water is a blessing.”

—Juan, currently studying to be a member of his local WASH leadership network in Colombia

When I first started working here, we were facing serious water challenges. I can still remember the anxiety I felt when mothers came in to deliver their babies and had to bring their own water. Then WaterAid stepped in, and everything changed. We finally had a reliable water system, renovated the toilet facilities for both men and women and a purifier for drinking water. I finally feel like I’m able to do my job the way I always wanted to — with care, compassion, and the confidence that we are providing the best possible environment for these new lives to begin.”
—Zainab, a midwife at the Msanga Health Center in Tanzania

Millions more stories like these exist because of you, so let’s celebrate these wins today!

And tomorrow, the work continues in the mission to reach everyone, everywhere with clean water, sanitation and hygiene.

Because these stories, right here? That’s the power of clean water.

Thank you for all that you do!
