Zara's reality

Zara is 8 and is already severely malnourished and stunted due to the effects of dirty water. Zara and everyone else in her village of Bemanonga commune, near Morondava in Madagascar is suffering and the consequences are dire.

Children miss school due to sickness, or families spend too much time and money on trying to source clean drinking water, meaning that they cannot work or start businesses. It is holding them all back.

Hand up not a hand out

Clean water and reliable toilets will change this depressing cycle of poverty, it will make the entire community healthier and able to reach their full potential themselves. The people of Bemanonga are ready to build and maintain their water system. This will then service the entire community and transform their lives, for this generation and beyond.

There is a solution

Last year, WaterAid reached more than seven million people with the life-saving gift of clean water, sanitation and hygiene. When the village of Ampasika, Madagascar, got clean, running water at the health clinic, the community noticed an incredible change.

This is the biggest improvement I have ever seen

"Now we no longer have to fetch water far away from home. We no longer drink dirty water. Since we have had clean water, I haven’t seen any children become victims of diarrhea anymore"
Niaretana, 32, a health worker
