How can children learn and thrive at school without clean water and decent toilets?
It means that children spend their days thirsty and dehydrated, struggling to concentrate. It means that girls have nowhere hygienic and private to manage their periods, leading them to miss classes and fall behind.
And it means thousands of young people are denied access to the education – and opportunities – they deserve.
This is the reality for pupils in more than half of schools across sub-Saharan Africa – but together, we’re determined to change it.
Ethopia – Elevating Impact
By the end of March 2024, in conjunction with funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation through the Millennium Water Alliance, we’re planning to reach 11,000 students in the Amhara region of Ethiopia with access to clean water, decent sanitation and good hygiene.
Habtamu’s school has already seen the benefit of clean water and decent toilets, and Habtamu is proud to have learned about good hygiene, thanks to training sessions organised by WaterAid.
He’s now the sanitation minister of his school’s WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) club, and shares his knowledge of good hygiene habits with fellow students.
[Now] my role is to train other students to look after their personal and environmental hygiene. We have started taking turns to clean the toilet and our school compound.

Together, we can spark lasting change with access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. And together, we can ensure more young people like Habtamu have the opportunity to realise their potential.
