Safe water and sanitation are now recognised as human rights but over 884 million people do not have access to safe water. 2.6 billion people do not have access to decent sanitation and over 4,000 children die every day as a result of diarrhoeal diseases.
WaterAid believes that governments, institutions and powerful individuals have a responsibility to make positive changes to deal with this injustice.
In the UK, there has been some positive understanding on the part of the UK government that we need to deal with this crisis now – we had a great turnout at Westminster Walks for Water on World Water Day, with over 40 MPs taking part.
However, we believe they can do even more by increasing their ambitions, but we need your help...

Campaigning is a valuable way to show the government that you care about this crisis and gain greater commitment to dealing with the issue now.
We'd like to see the UK government commit to lifting 100 million out of water and sanitation poverty.
Using the momentum from World Water Day 2011, we worked to submit an Early Day Motion (EDM) at Westminster. An EDM is a formal motion submitted by an MP to draw attention to an issue, so that they can demonstrate it's something both the public and MPs should be prioritising.
However, in order to make sure it gets coverage and is debated, we need MPs to unite behind EDM 1632 and to get hundreds of their signatures. That's why your help in emailing, calling or writing to your local representative is invaluable and desperately needed.
Could you ask your local MP to help be part of a call for change that will benefit millions of the world's poorest people?
