The partnership is expected to run from Feb 2018 to Jan 2019 to create replicable examples of community managed safe drinking water facilities for 10 urban slums not just through community action but also by working closely with key departments of the Delhi Government to ensure that the requisite support is received and to encourage them to expand these efforts to other locations.

The objectives can further be classified under the below broad heads :

Ensuring Equitable and Sustainable access to improved Water, Sanitation and Hygiene services in the intervention area: Achieved through Water and Sanitation hardware, water security including water recharge measures wherever permissible environmental sanitation including solid waste management.

To ensure empowered people demand and realize their Water, Sanitation and Hygiene rights: This will be achieved through mobilizing and influencing the community and networking with all stakeholders (community collectives like Awas Samities , urban local body representatives, WASH service providers , other community service organisations etc. )

Formation and Capacity building of Community collectives in slums

Improved hygiene: Community is made aware on good hygiene practices on handwashing, safe handling of water, menstrual hygiene management and capacity building of Safai Karmis (Cleaning staff of ULB) etc.

Public and Political awareness: Building the capacity of local urban local bodies (ULBs), campaigns on 4 critical days like world water day, and influencing.

With the support of BACL, WaterAid India and its partners, around 12500 people residing in these slums would be directly reached through this project’s interventions and will have access to safe water. Additionally, approximately 100 people would be trained to enhance their livelihood options.

Program outcome

Families in the identified slums will have reliable access to safe drinking water in their homes.

Safe water will be provided at the household level and service standards of availability tracked.

Community-based groups with the requisite support from government manage the system.
