Baseline Survey Report on Faecal Sludge and Solid Waste Management in Saidpur

With a growth rate of 3.44%, in Bangladesh around 35.6% of the total population is living in urban area. Due to high rate of migration in urban areas; currently, waste management has become a major concern in the cities and towns and faecal sludge management is not adequate due to the lack of awareness among the citizens and insufficient service delivery from the city corporations and municipalities.  The baseline study finds, about 98% of the household of Saidpur have emptied their pit/septic tank by private sweepers through manual emptying processes. Only 1% of the surveyed household have received emptying service from municipality About 60% of the households have dumped the sludge illegally on the open water bodies (canal, ponds, drains) and open places and 40% of the households have buried the sludge into ditch within their own yard. The study illustrates, the discharging of collected faecal sludge into open water bodies might account for serious environmental implications in near future.
