What your fundraising will achieve
The village of Bhetkali in southern Bangladesh is surrounded by water – but most of it isn’t drinkable.
Heavy rains cause flash floods several times a year, submerging people's homes, washing away crops, and contaminating ponds with saltwater and pesticides. And, as climate change brings increasingly common extreme weather like cyclones, the situation is only getting worse.
Shyamoli, and many other women like her, walk for up to four hours to fetch drinking water from other villages, balancing heavy containers on their hips. It's a time-consuming, painful and dangerous journey.
If I have to go alone, I’m afraid. The roads aren't very safe and I’m afraid I’m going to trip and fall, especially when it’s dark.
But there's a simple solution that could change this – and give women like Shyamoli the power to transform their lives.
A rainwater harvesting system can harness the power of the torrential downpours, turning them into a reliable supply of clean water.
We've already worked with nearby communities to set up similar technology, so we know it can work here in Bhetkali too. It’s simple, sustainable and easy for local residents to maintain.
By taking on Just Water, the funds you raise will help bring clean water to Bhetkali – and other communities facing the impacts of ever more extreme and unpredictable weather.
